Dentures are dental prostheses often referred to as ‘False Teeth’ or ‘Falsies’ made of coloured (pink) acrylic with prefabricated acylic teeth that can be used to replace a full set of teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.
When constructed with care, dentures look just as natural as the teeth they are replacing. However, the BIGGEST PROBLEMS patients encounter with dentures are lack of retention and denture movement that can cause pain, gum irritation and ulcers…. Worse still loose dentures have been known to to fall out of the wearers mouth during eating and speaking. In addition, the wearing of dentures can alter one’s sense of taste and all of these problems can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life.
Implants can also be placed into the jaw bone to help retain what is called an ‘overdenture’, that is clipped on and off the implants by the patient.
In the bottom jaw (mandible), a minimum of 2 implants are required for a removable implant-retained denture. The denture has two fitting components that clip onto a matching component screwed down onto the implants… a common system used at CDIC is called “Locators™”.
In the upper jaw (Maxilla), a minimum of 4 conventional implants are required. These are often joined by a milled titanium bar that carries the Locator™ components allowing the denture to be clipped on and off for easier cleaning.
