Clear Ortho(dontic) Aligners: Get the smile of your dreams

Clear Ortho Aligner treatment involves the wearing of a series of removable, clear plastic positioners (aligners) designed to fit over your teeth and gently guide them into their desired new position over time. Clear Ortho Aligners are used to correct crooked or misaligned teeth and are available for most people as an alternative to fixed metal braces. The discrete appearance and ability to be removed while eating or drinking makes this is a popular orthodontic treatment method for older teens and adults.

The Benefits of Clear Orthodontic Aligners Over Traditional Braces
  • Comfortable fit
  • Clear and discrete appearance
  • Affordable costs
  • Removable – no dietary restrictions
  • Minimal impact on daily life
  • Safe for teens and adults

Getting your Clear Ortho Aligners

During the initial consultation, your dentist will evaluate your dental health to see if clear aligners are right for you. While this is an effective treatment for a variety of tooth malalignment problems, it is not suitable for people with certain oral health conditions, large gaps, severe overbites or tooth intrusion and protrusions. If your condition is not suited to aligners, your dentist will provide you with alternatives that will work for you such as braces, crowns, veneers or others.

If your dentist confirms clear aligners are appropriate for you, they will take impressions and create 3D computerised images of your teeth in order to create custom aligners to suit your individual needs. The number of aligners you will wear depends on your unique needs, however, the average treatment involves the use of 18 - 36 aligners.

Clear Orthodontic Aligners Treatment

During your treatment period, you will need to wear the aligners every day, removing them for short breaks while eating, drinking (water excepted), brushing and flossing. Your dentist will monitor your progress and provide you with a new sets of aligners at your fortnightly regular aligner review appointment.

During your treatment, you will start noticing small changes in the position of your teeth as the clear aligners gradually move your teeth to create a more even, straighter smile. Most people find clear aligners more comfortable than wearing braces. You may feel pressure for a few days every time you begin wearing a new aligners. The easing of the pressure is a good sign that your teeth are shifting into the desired position.

Yes, clear aligners are effective for teens and adults with misaligned teeth. This treatment uses a series of clear aligners of varying sizes to gradually straighten your teeth over time.

Not all patients are provided with both options. Aligners are ideal for correcting mild to moderate dental malocclusions (crooked teeth and misalignment) whereas braces do the same as well as additional issues such as jaw rotation, large gaps and spacing, overcrowding, bite irregularity and severe misalignment. Generally, people with mild issues in older teen/adult age groups will prefer aligners to braces as they are virtually invisible, more comfortable, easier to clean and can be removed.

Clear aligners are meant to be worn up to 22 hours a day in order to work effectively, taking them out only to eat, drink, brush or floss your teeth. They are safe to wear while drinking water. Usually, aligners are replaced with a new set every fortnight and the average full treatment period is about 12 months, however, this will depend on each patient’s individual needs.
