What is an Oral Check-up?

Maintaining a high standard of oral hygiene contributes to healthy gums and avoidance of periodontal (gum) disease. Gum disease causes bone loss around teeth, but just as important can have a direct effects on the health of your entire body. Avoiding gum disease is important for the prevention of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, arthritis, pregnancy complications, and some cancers.

Oral Health Therapists – formerly known as Dental Hygienists at CDIC are available to take care of your teeth and gums and we recommend regular visits that help reduce bad breath (halitosis) and other dental diseases.

Gums and underlying bone free from disease are the foundation of a healthy smile. Our ‘Active Maintenance’ program will help you achieve optimum oral hygiene and subsequently optimal oral health. We will also teach you what to do and how to maintain your teeth and gums between your dental visits.

For more information on our Active Maintenance program, please contact us at the CDIC.

Your active maintenance appointment includes:

  • Evaluation of your oral health that may include measuring the depth of the gum pockets around your teeth, the amount of plaque on your teeth, as well as your brushing technique.
  • Removal of the hard tartar build-up that may have accumulated above and more importantly below the gum line.
  • Polishing of the teeth, and fluoride treatment when required.
  • Expert advice on how to best take care of your mouth and dental / implant restorations, as well as the chance to ask any questions you may have.
  • Dental radiographs (“x-rays”). These are routinely taken every 2 years to check the areas of your mouth and teeth that are not visible. Occasionally they are required more often to monitor the progress of certain treatments or to check the the jaws prior to treatments ot to rule out other pathologies.
  • A tailored home care program to help you maintain a high level of oral health , hopefully avoiding the need for extensive dental treatments.
